SUSAN GERRED, TAAF PRESIDENT 2009-2010 – Please click here for information regarding the recent passing of our President, Susan Gerred.
May 28, 2010
Greetings TAAF Athletes and Member Cities,
I write this to you with a saddened heart as the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation lost a member of our family. Our President, Ms. Susan Gerred, was involved in an unfortunate accident which took her life this week. The accident took place while doing something she loved to do, riding her bicycle and training for the next big event.
Susan served TAAF in many capacities including chairperson of the Games of Texas committee and she has been a member of several other committees including the Hall of Fame, Finance, and Legislative to name just a few. She has served as the State Commissioner for High School Girls Basketball, hosted numerous flag football state championships as tournament director and been a TAAF Games of Texas Liaison for over 20 years. Susan has been TAAF’s link to the Big Country and Texoma areas while serving as both Regional Director and Executive Board Member for Region 8. In 2007 the Federation elected her into the office as President-Elect and took office as President in September 2009. Now I may have missed a few of her service accomplishments while a member of TAAF, but make no mistake, she lived and breathed our Federation. She was honored and humbled when the membership chose her to serve as our President. She cherished this immensely.
As most of you know Susan retired from the City of Abilene in March after twenty-seven years of service to the communities of Wichita Falls and Abilene. Her passion for the recreation profession was unquestioned. She loved being part of providing activities, special events as well as sports leagues and tournaments that showcased the cities she served. One of her biggest passions in life was letting people know what the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation has done for her professionally, but most of all what it has done for the communities and its athletes, the young ones and the veterans. Sharing stories of various happenings during the tournaments she hosted and constantly learning how to handle the challenges of our profession was something she enjoyed with her colleagues. To many, she has played a big role in our lives as a colleague, a mentor and most of all a friend.
Flowers may be sent to Smith Funeral Home also located in Quanah. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 31 at First Baptist Church in Quanah, Texas at 11:00 AM. The family has stated that if you would like to make a contribution to the TAAF Scholarship Fund in memoriam, please send it to TAAF Scholarship Fund P.O. Box 1789; Georgetown, TX 78627-1789
Please keep Susan and her family in your heart, minds, thoughts and prayers as they proceed through these difficult times. Let us celebrate her life of service as well as her unending passion to compete hard, smile when we’re done and enjoy life to its fullest. I know she would want us to do this most of all.
Sincerely,
Mark Lord, Executive Director Texas Amateur Athletic Federation |
